Until the company has even a single employee in Russia - the whole company and its products are compromised. Would you use any product of such kind if it would be developed in USSR? The answer is obvious - NO.įrom the human rights and totalitarian control perspective, Russia, nowadays, is the same as USSR was decades ago. Without getting too political, people in authoritarian dictatorships don’t have the rights and legal system that western democracies have, and until that changes, it doesn’t seem wise to use when there are so many other options available.
Even IF the AdGuard people are good guys, when the bulk of their management, developers, staff, and even family and friends are still IN Russia they don’t have a choice. I know a lot of people really like AdGuard, but my concern is that no matter where they move their headquarters too they still have very deep Russian ties and are susceptible to the Kremlin. I’m not sure if all their products are open source or not, but I’m not sure how much that matters anyway? Telemetry that would be perfectly reasonable could be weaponized, malicious updates could be pushed, and data can be collected open source or not.
